Adrian Bumann

Adrian Bumann is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Informatics at the University of Umeå. He earned his PhD at Chalmers University of Technology in 2024. His research interests span interorganizational digital innovation, the development of artificial intelligence for complex and high-stakes environments, and the evolution of digital infrastructures. His current projects explore how AI technologies are designed to support decision-making for maritime navigators, the implementation of the EU-wide digital infrastructure for port logistics, and how digital innovators navigate knowledge boundaries across organizational contexts.

His teaching activities include lecturing within the topics of digital innovation management, project management, entrepreneurship, and bridge resource management for maritime navigation. He has also supervised a number of masters theses.

Adrian’s research has appeared in peer-reviewed academic outlets and book chapters. His paper “No Ground Truth at Sea – Developing High-Accuracy AI Decision-Support for Complex Environments” was nominated for Best Paper at the 2024 Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS). 

Adrian has previously worked in the merchant navy, most recently as first nautical officer.
